Plumber, Drainer and Gasfitter Licences Explained

Queensland separates the licences for people and businesses: the tradie on the tools needs an occupational licence, and any business taking plumbing and drainage jobs on needs a contractor licence. The QBCC, the state's building regulator, grants both.

The occupational licence shows the holder carries the trade skills their class covers. The contractor licence shows the business behind them has what it takes to carry jobs through properly, not just a ute and a toolbox.

Each stream of work sits under its own licence:

  • A plumber's licence covers plumbing work in and around the house, apart from anything needing an endorsement of its own.
  • A drainer's licence covers the below-ground side: sewers, stormwater lines and the drains that carry water off the block.
  • Gas fitting is separate again. A licensed gasfitter is the only person in Queensland who may install, remove, alter, repair, service, test and certify a gas system, its pipework and its connections.

How a Plumbing Job Runs From Call to Finish

  1. 1

    You tell us what's wrong

Ring (07) 3523 6484 or send the contact form with what you've noticed. A clear description, even a photo, helps us pack the right parts.

  2. 2

    We diagnose on site

We trace the fault to its source: under the floor, inside the wall or at the fixture itself. That holds for an older home near Samford Road and for a newer build by the Ferny Grove shopping village, just across the boundary. No parts get swapped on a hunch.

  3. 3

    You approve a fixed price

You get a fixed quote before any work starts. Flat-rate pricing and no hidden fees, so the figure you sign is the figure you pay, and nothing goes ahead until you give it the nod.

  4. 4

    We test and hand over

We run the repaired fixture through a full cycle, confirm it holds, and give you whatever paperwork the job generates.

Paperwork and Inspections After a Job

Oversight splits two ways: the QBCC handles licensing and records notifiable jobs in its register, while the local council, the City of Moreton Bay, processes permit applications and carries out inspections.

Here is the paperwork that reaches you:

  • Form 4: after notifiable work, the owner or whoever engaged us receives a copy. If yours never arrives, the QBCC can supply one.
  • Gas system compliance certificate: once gas work on a new install or alteration is finished, the licensed gasfitter gives it to you straight away.
  • Council inspection: you're entitled to have the council check notifiable work while it's underway.

If something ever looks wrong with our work, tell us first. Persistent problems, unlicensed work or a missing Form 4 can go to the QBCC as an online complaint.

The Suburbs We Work Across

Our regular run covers Ferny Hills and its neighbours, with Bunya and Upper Kedron each carrying their own page. The full suburbs we cover list names the rest.

Units, rentals and owner-occupied houses all get the same treatment. Whether you own, manage or rent, book a plumber the same way, and gas jobs of any size go through our gas fitting service.

Questions About Who Does the Work

Call (07) 3523 6484

What is the difference between a plumber and a drainer?

A plumber's licence covers the plumbing work, meaning the fixtures, taps and pipework in and around the house. A drainer's licence covers drainage work below ground level, such as sewers and stormwater lines. Plenty of tradies, ours included, hold both.

Does gas work in my Ferny Hills home need a separate licence?

Yes, gas work sits on its own licence in Queensland, and only a licensed gasfitter may install, alter, repair or certify a gas system. Before any gas job begins, you're welcome to ask to see our gas work licence.

Which suburbs near Ferny Hills do you cover?

Our run takes in Bunya and Upper Kedron, each with their own page, plus every other neighbour on our suburbs we cover list. Ring and ask about a street past those. We say yes where the diary allows.

Do you work on units and rentals as well as houses?

Yes, we work for owner-occupiers, landlords, tenants and unit owners alike. Who approves the job and who pays differs, because a tenant answers to the owner or property manager, and a unit may involve a body corporate.
